The need for a sieve

In my 5 years as an IT (Information Technology) professional, there's something I've always wanted to happen in my chosen profession. My wish may be somewhat selfish and saddistic, but I believe it is necessary.

I want an IT licensure exam to be organized for future aspiring IT practicioners; and I also want our generation to be required to take this exam.

I have been involved in many projects and exposed to a phletora of people, and I can only conclude one thing. A lot of people in the IT business don't really know what they are doing or talking about sometimes. In the IT profession, whatever sub-discipline you're in (development, documentation, design, most especially consultancy) -- mistakes costs money, ranging from two thousand pesos to millions of US dollars. And I'll bet these mistakes are not made usually by malpractice, but by simply not checking the quality and qualifications of individuals assigned to a task. Because of this, companies are coming up with their own standards which are really far-off from the base qualifications of an IT practitioner. Quality suffers, which causes a solution or a product to suffer. All because of improper selection of personnel for a job.

That's why I want this licensure exam to happen -- to weed out the vines from the rest of the crop.
Or at least, to classify your level of expertise to make sure that people are given just and fair salaries depending on what you really know, not with what you claim to know.

ANYONE can claim to be an IT practicioner with a decorated resume, but when it's time to show your employer the money, you can't do squat. Why does this happen? Because there's no certifiying body for qualifications in practicing IT. And companies are better off investing time and money on the right people.
