The need for a sieve

In my 5 years as an IT (Information Technology) professional, there's something I've always wanted to happen in my chosen profession. My wish may be somewhat selfish and saddistic, but I believe it is necessary.

I want an IT licensure exam to be organized for future aspiring IT practicioners; and I also want our generation to be required to take this exam.

I have been involved in many projects and exposed to a phletora of people, and I can only conclude one thing. A lot of people in the IT business don't really know what they are doing or talking about sometimes. In the IT profession, whatever sub-discipline you're in (development, documentation, design, most especially consultancy) -- mistakes costs money, ranging from two thousand pesos to millions of US dollars. And I'll bet these mistakes are not made usually by malpractice, but by simply not checking the quality and qualifications of individuals assigned to a task. Because of this, companies are coming up with their own standards which are really far-off from the base qualifications of an IT practitioner. Quality suffers, which causes a solution or a product to suffer. All because of improper selection of personnel for a job.

That's why I want this licensure exam to happen -- to weed out the vines from the rest of the crop.
Or at least, to classify your level of expertise to make sure that people are given just and fair salaries depending on what you really know, not with what you claim to know.

ANYONE can claim to be an IT practicioner with a decorated resume, but when it's time to show your employer the money, you can't do squat. Why does this happen? Because there's no certifiying body for qualifications in practicing IT. And companies are better off investing time and money on the right people.

"Filipino traits that suck" vol. 1

[ be reminded that laughs in this posts are sarcastic ]

Welcome to a weekend edition of "Filipino Traits that suck" vol. 1

KILL UTANG na LOOB ver. 1.0

I have a friend who lives and works in Makati. She sends money to her family in the province occassionally, to finance the schooling of her two brothers who are in gradeschool and highschool respectively. While this gesture is noble, I am upset with her routine because nothing substantial is happening to her financial growth. But more importantly, I am upset because her parents are not doing anything. They are not taking their initiatives to support themselves and her other brothers. They are expecting her to send money regularly for them and for her brothers. My friend has 3 sisters, 2 of which I'm sure are married (spelled: untouchable), so now the parents are looking only at her for support.

Now, the only consolation I'm supposed to hear from her is that they are extending their love and care to her, albeit in the province; but unfortunately, this is not the case. Her parents act as if their only single daughter owes her parents a lot for putting her through school, etc. They don't even bother ask how is she doing, etc. How sad. I can imagine a lot of well-to-do and poor filipino family setups like this. They don't even bother to ask for help from her other siblings who are married and building their families. It's not her fault is doesn't feel like marrying yet. Why should she be the one supporting them when I see her deprived of the things that she should be enjoying?

I wonder how elder filipino's have the gall to keep on living with outstreched open palms to their younger kin for support. They teach their children wrongly. I think a parent's obligation to raise and educate their young ends at that. The children are not supposed to be obligated to extend help to them (I'm not saying that they shouldn't help). It's just that everyone should try creating value on their own so that a family grows stronger together, not be parasites towards each other.

Yes, it's finally here. My new blog. After weeks of comtemplating, I've finally had the time to make my own blog. Thanks to two of my friends (who are also bloggers) now I think I will keep this running for about a year if I manage to find time to post regularly. Good luck to me.
